1. NPO Soissons Youngsters against 7,056 pigeons

The NPO young bird race from Soissons (356 km) had a very late release at 13:45 hrs with a north wind, in which Team Eijerkamp entered 74 youngsters. Based on the speed in the shortest distance, we calculated that we needed to clock around 19:26 hrs. But nearly three minutes earlier, "Marek", NL25-1161849 NL25-1161849 came rocketing home, recording a speed of 1,068 m.p.m. and immediately surpassing the fastest time up to that point. Then the waiting began for the official result — and "Marek" remained on top, winning 1. NPO Soissons (356 km) against 7,056 pigeons in Section 8.

'Marek' was bred in the champion loft of R.C. Bakker (Dolf and Ruud) in Zoelen. His sire, NL22-443, had already produced this year’s 1. National Issoudun winner for Bakker and now again proved himself as the father of another NPO winner. The Bakker loft is regarded as one of the strongest satellite lofts of Gerard Koopman. Over the past years, their pigeons have won numerous races at federation, provincial, NPO, and national level, establishing the Bakkers as one of the top lofts in the Netherlands today.

Our next three pigeons arrived together at 19:27 hrs. With sunset approaching, only about 10% of the birds had returned, making this a very tough race. The final result in Section 8 against 7,056 pigeons was: 1–12–16–17–19–23–37–44, and so on.
