Today we flew the second last race of the 2017 season. The young birds were kept home so the hens, who had already flown since the first race in April, had the task of upholding our honour.
The speeds flown by the shorter lofts were not achieved by our pigeons, what with the head wind was not surprising.
Our first one came down out of a group of four pigeons, the other three flew through.

Today we flew the last young bird race from Troyes and it turned into a tough one for the young pigeons. They were released late due to fog and overcast skies and the way home was not clear sailing either, if the weather maps are to be believed.
There was a weak south-westerly wind blowing at the start of the race which turned to the north-west, still blowing lightly, later in the afternoon.
In any case the weather conditions dictated slow returns and after an hour we had only 37 of the 109 shipped safely home.
This is far from the way the birds homed the last several weeks.

A few more races and the 2017 will be behind us. Two more weeks and it’s over. Today we had a natoer race on the schedule. Besides the old birds we had 50 youngsters entered in this race, youngsters who had started moulting and didn’t have much of a chance to fly near the top of the sheet.

After a false start when last week’s race was cancelled, the first natour (old and young) race was flown today. There was a brisk West wind, making for very high speeds. Within 10 minutes there were about 60 of the 96 pigeons shipped home, showing that conditions were very good.

There are races you never forget. Today was one of them. The youngsters have flown very well so far, this year and our expectations from Nanteuil (408 km) were high.
We already knew the flown speeds would be high today, but when the NL17-1819886 stormed into the loft at 3:11 flying at a speed of 1,622 mpm out hearts beat a little faster because, this could very well be a very early pigeon.
When it took a few minutes before the second youngster was clocked the tension grew. Because, the site showing the reported arrivals was down, we didn’t know how early we were. When at last the notification, site came back on line, it had "Christina" at the top and that’s where she stayed.

The weather gods have been less then jovial the last two weeks, for the second week in a row the race was postponed till Sunday.
The weather today seemed fine, but you wouldn’t know it by the way the birds came home. A few pigeons on other lofts were well out front and the arrivals were slower than normal.
A possible explanation could be that the wind had changed direction on the route home and these are all inexperienced youngsters.
After clocking for two hours we had 110 youngsters home of the 145 shipped, clearly slower than the first weeks.

After a one day delay, the young pigeons were released today under very good conditions.  This was the first time the youngsters had spent an extra night in the baskets and we wondered how they would handle it. We clocked 4 out front and they turned out to be the first 4 against 4,162 pigeons and with a prize percentage of almost 60%, it was a great result. It was our own family of pigeons crossed with the G&S Verkerk, Heremans-Ceusters and J&M Geven pigeons who won the top prizes.

The old bird season ended today with the race from Issoudun. Because, this race didn’t count for anything, we had a low number of shippers in our Section.  Fortunately, the number of pigeons entered in the Noordelijke Unie Zone 2, in which we fly, was large at almost 3,800 pigeons, against which a tremendous performance was delivered.
This way we could "almost" forget the disappointing result from Chateauroux.

Today, the youngsters had to bridge a distance of 260 km. They had a strong wind on their backs, plenty of clouds and some drizzle to deal with. Fortunately, the pigeons were released early, which minimized the chance of clashing with other releases.
The speeds were more than 100 km per hour and after 30 minutes we had 100 of the 153-shipped home and at the end all 153 returned.

The pigeon sport can be full of surprises. This became clear again today from Chateauroux. After weeks of top results this year, our expectations were high today. However, when the speeds from those flying shorter than us trickled in and we hadn’t seen a pigeon, it became clear that a top classification today was not in the cards.
Unfortunately, that’s the way it is and we send our heartfelt congratulations to the winners.

Today we flew from Isnes (204 km). This was the second race for the young birds. The weather conditions were good and we expected a speed of approximately 1,500 mpm. We were greatly surprised when at 11:30 a group of pigeons arrived at our loft, all of which trapped into our loft. Once they were in it literally rained pigeons and in just over 15 minutes we had 100 in the clock.

There was little wind, the temperatures were fine and the visibility was good.
We’ll wait and see how this race turns out, regardless of the outcome to-day, our old pigeons have performed tremendously this year.

The first young bird race is once again behind us. These early young bird races go hand in hand with lots of excitement. Firstly, they are tense just because it is their first race and secondly the question in the back of everyone’s mind is, how well will they come home.
As expected when shipping 200 pigeons several came home together and they were quickly followed by the others. In approximately 12 minutes we had about one hundred in the clock. Once we had 125 home the times between the rest of the arrivals became longer.

The Dagfond race (distance >500 km) was flown from Bourges (620 km) today. There was a side head wind along a good part of the race course.
Last week the races had been cancelled and for the first time this year these pigeons had missed a race. We wondered how this would affect the pigeons.
Within 40 minutes of the first arrival we had 20 of the 47 we had shipped home.

Because last week’s races were cancelled, we flew an extra middle-distance race today. The intention was to fly a race from around 400 km, but due to a minor accident en route it was decided to go no further then Loan (327 km).
The weather conditions were not ideal for the pigeons, underscored by the returns from Barcelona released some 27 hours earlier, at this time only one pigeon has been reported in northern France.
After our first pigeon clocked it took 8 minutes for the next one to time in, after which the birds came regularly. A half hour after our first, we had 24 of the 36 shipped, in the clock.

The third one day distance race (races >500 kilometers) was flown from Bourges ( 620 km) today. Just like earlier today on the middle-distance race from Laon, racing conditions were not optimal.
It was overcast with rain or drizzle.
At the release station and the first part of the race the weather was good, so we expected that the race returns would be quicker.
The first pigeon flew at a speed well above 90 km/hr., but despite the fast speed there were only 5 in the clock after 15 minutes after which they started to come regularly.

After a week of temperatures above 30°C, today was very disappointing. The skies were heavily overcast with drizzle and the temperatures didn’t make 20°C. These conditions are far from ideal for a pigeon race.
This resulted in slow returns. It took 6 minutes after the first arrival before we saw the next pigeon, which is a long time, considering the first one was flying around 100 km/hr.
A half hour after the first pigeon we had 16 of the 48 we shipped home, which is slow when compared to the last weeks.

The pigeons were released at a distance of 408 km from Nanteuil le Haudouin today. Due to heavy overcast skies, they could not be released early. With a North-West wind blowing directly on their noses, we had estimated the would fly at a speed of around 1,300 m/m.
They flew somewhat slower than we had thought, but came home quickly.
After just over half an hour we had 60 of the 84 we had shipped home.

The pigeon sport can be full of surprises as we saw again today. The pigeons came close together today from the middle-distance race released at Erpernay and we had every reason to believe that the pigeons from Chateaudun (564 km) would also have a fairly easy race.
This was the wrong assumption as the race turned out to be much harder. The wind, which changed direction on the way home, may have been the reason for the slower returns.
Despite that our pigeons, as opposed to those of many other fanciers, came relatively well, as after two hours we had clocked 32 of the 36 we had shipped.

It looks as if the decision to release our pigeons was the right one as within half an hour we had clocked 50 of the 87 pigeons shipped.
A nice preparation of the dagfond race scheduled for next week.

This the weekend during which we are flying the first dagfond race, the last short distance race was also flown.
This time the pigeons were released from Vervins under difficult conditions. Not only did the wind blow out of the south east, which always makes it tough for the pigeons, the temperatures went up over the 30-degree mark.
Because the pigeons had performed formidably of late, we were confident that the race would go well.
As often happens with these winds and high temperatures, the pigeons came slow and a half hour after clocking our first pigeon, half the pigeons were home.

The first dagfond race of 2017 will go in the books as a super hard race. There were indications that it would be a tough race earlier. That could be seen on the arrivals of the pigeons from Vervins earlier in the day.
But, that it would become this tough will have come as a surprise to most of the fanciers. The pigeons came very slow, after we had clocked the first two pigeons it took 20 minutes before we had our next one and after an hour there were 11 of the 42 shipped in the clock.
Many pigeons came home dazed and we hope most of the pigeons will still be able to find their way home.

Today the pigeons had to bridge a distance of 299 km, with the wind on their backs and the possibility of a shower on the way home.
We had heard reports on the speeds attained by our competition and our first one clocked was flying faster which is positive.
The pigeons came close together, something we had become used to the last few weeks. We had 70 of the 100 shipped in the clock in 15 minutes.

Today we flew our first middle distance race of the season from Epernay, a distance of 376 km to our loft. The weather on the race course was variable with some showers and a south west wind.
After the formidable results of the last weeks, we were feeling positive about this weeks race. We had heard from other sections that the race was very irregular. We had two pigeons come together and then had to wait for 5 minutes for the third. They had flown at speeds of more than 100 km/hr., which was in line with the reports we had received earlier.

Today, the pigeons flew from Chimay and conditions were different from those of the first weeks. They wind was out of the east whereas the first weeks of this season the winds were out of the northwest. Usually, with easterly winds the races run a little less smoothly, but these races can give a good indication of the overall form of your loft.
After the unprecedented results of last week, we naturally were in good spirits. There were 4 pigeons together on the first drop, of which "Amara" and "Sabine" clocked on the same second.

Today we flew the third race of the new season. It was still cold for this time of year but, the skies were only partly cloudy, the air was clear giving the pigeons good visibility.
It was mainly the Heremans-Ceusters from "Jackpot" and a few Stefaan Lambrechts pigeons and their crosses that were our first pigeons home.
The pigeons came well and within a half hour there were 85 of the 102 we had shipped, clocked and in the loft.

After the super result a week ago, today’s result could be called SENSATIONAL! We had shipped 104 pigeons and 81 finished in the prizes against 6,345 pigeons in the region, 10 of them placing in the first 50 prizes.
The weather conditions were similar to last week’s, only the wind was a bit stronger against them.
The pigeons put up a formidable result as of the 104 sent, 100 were home in an hour.
The first pigeon clocked didn’t race last week, thus showing the quality she possess.

Today we flew the first race of the 2017 season. The birds were held till late in the afternoon due to bad weather on the race route.
Of course as we waited, we were tense, because as usual, at the start of a new season you are never quite sure whether the pigeons are ready to face the competition.
Once the preliminary results were known it seemed that we had the 1st pigeon against 1,881 pigeons.
In the Regio against 6,267 pigeons we were also 1st and had a prize percentage of 54%.

A good and satisfying beginning to the new season.
